Yes.: Smoking can increase the chance of someone with sickle cell disease of having a vaso-occlusive crisis. Smoking causes decreased oxygen, increased inflammation, and lower ph, all of which can cause red blood cells to irreversibly sickle. Smoking increases the chance of acute chest syndrome, a potentially life-threatening event for someone with sickle cell disease.
