Poor growth, aching: Severe vitamin d deficiency in a child over time will produce rickets. This condition causes poor growth, deformity of the lower extremities and muscle aches. If diagnosed by the finding of a low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d level in blood it also results in low blood calcium and phosphorus levels. If treated at an early stage with vitamin d the child should achieve normal growth.
