Multiple causes: Welts or hives on the skin are usually triggered by increased allergy cell activation (mast cells) that release histamine. If present for less than 6 weeks, they can be secondary to medication, infection, food, or sting. If they last greater than 6 weeks, there is often no known cause or there can be an autoimmune etiology.
