How is a barium enema used to treat a child's gastrointestinal tract birth defects?

Dr. Anatoly Belilovsky

It's not.: It is used to diagnose GI tract birth defects; it is used to treat an acquired condition called intususception, in which small bowel "telescopes" and becomes jammed in large bowel. Barium under pressure pushes it back out while at the same time showing "before" and "after" pictures -- confirming both diagnosis and cure.

My child has a stomach ache with his chickenpox, can I give them pepto-bismol?

2 doctor answers5 doctors weighed in

Not recommended: Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) has a component salycelate that was linled with a devistating disease called reye's syndrome in the 70's & 80's. After physicians stopped recomending salycelate products there was a rapid decline in the frequency of that problem. Discuss your concern with your physician for the best possible comfort meds.

Even the chewable calcium carbonate Kids' Pepto worries me because it's pink, & it's bismuth subsalicylate that causes that color.

If my child has a possible wrist or arm fracture, when must I take him to er?

Dr. James Ferguson

??signs??: Kids capable of waking off an injury will, they are more interested in playing & seldom stop unless something really hurts. If no obvious deformity or discoloration of the skin, you might watch it for a while & place a cool compress to help the pain & reduce the swelling. Do this only if the kid can make a fist & extend it & roll the hand back & forth. If not, get it checked now.

Is giving your child gardasil HPV vaccine kind of like giving them permission to have sex?

Not in my opinion: You need to discuss that with your child and their doctor, it is to prevent hpv when they do have sex which hopefully won't be until they are older which depends on you and her !
