How can stasis lead to edema?

Venous return: Veins in the leg use the surrounding muscles, in addition to valves in the vessels themselves, to aid in returning blood to the heart. When a person has dysfunctional valves and lives a sedentary lifestyle, the muscles are not actively contracting and the veins lose that assistance which can lead venous insufficiency and edema of the legs.
