How does astigmatism cause double vision?

Out of focus: Astigmatism makes a misshapen image (changed in one axis) and thus can have blurred edges and appear doubled or ghosted.

Astigmatism: Astigmatism prevents light rays from focusing together at the back of the eye. Because there is more than one focal point in the back of the eye when astigmatism is present, double vision results.
