A member asked:

Are cataracts and eye squints genetically inherited?

7 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Sometimes: Genetically inherited conditions are seen in children and may include cataract formation and "squints." squints are reactions to poor focus or cloudiness and thus, if the underlying cause are cataracts or strabismus there may indeed be a genetic component. Cataracts and squints in children must be addressed quickly to reduce the possibility of amblyopia or "lazy eye.".

Yes and no: Cataracts are something that all humans develop over our lifetimes. They may arise earlier in some with a family tendency, and there are some rare inherited types. Squints, or amblyopia, are a result of poor vision in one or both eyes. The poor vision can be inherited, and in some cases the amblyopia itself can as well.
