Is it a good idea to use remeron instead of zoloft (sertraline)?

Depends: This would be a decision you would make in partnership with your physician. Most antidepressants are thought to be = effective. Zoloft (sertraline) is an ssri and Remeron also blocks serotonin reputake, but in addition block Alpha 2 adrenergic receptors. It tends to be more sedating, more likely to cause appetite increase, less likely to cause nausea, and less likely to cause sexual side effects than zoloft (sertraline).

Clinical Decision: The selection of one antidepressant over an other is based upon a number of factors. First of all, the fda only grants approval to agents that are as effective as tofranil, (imipramine) one of the first antidepressants. But efficacy varies from person to person and one may be better at the level of the individual. Side effects play a role and can be quite varied. Whatever works best for you is the best choice.
