Yes if it breaks off: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a clot that has formed in one of the deep veins, typically in the legs. By itself the majority of cases do not cause death when treated properly. The clot however may become bigger or break loose, traveling to the heart and lungs where it becomes a more serious condition with a higher risk of death. Treatment usually is a blood thinner medication and close follow-up.

Not Directly: Fatalities from deep vein thrombosis occur when a blood clot deep in the body breaks off and travels to the heart and lungs and plugs up a blod vessel. It frequently starts in an arm or leg. It can stop yor heart or cause critical illness. The deep vein thrombosis itself can also cause other serious but not fatal complications.

Don't forget GCS: As dr. Hansen said, do not forget graduated compression stockings (gcs). They should have 30-40 mm hg compression and be knee high. Ted hose aren't adequate. Gcs need to be worn for at least 2 years to decrease the risk of post-thrombotic syndrome by 50%.
