A 37-year-old member asked:

Is it possible to get a hand transplant operation?

Yes: A few centers can do this procedure. The early results have been good for some, but some have lost the grafts. The potential recipient of a lost limb must undergo stringent medical and psychological testing to be sure they are right for such an undertaking.

Can someone get hand transplant?

Yes.: In cases of hand amputation where the amputated part is not salvageable, hand transplantation may be an option. This is an extremely complicated procedure performed in only a few medical centers around the country. The transplanted hand never functions like the original hand; sensation, strength, and movement are all likely to be significantly impaired.

How does a hand transplant operation work?

Dr. Ralph Layman
Transplant Surgery 20 years experience
Multiple steps: Hand transplants are done attaching the donor bones (usually at the midpoint of lower arm) to the patient bones with plates just as broken bones are treated. Next every individual tendon is reattached. The arteries and veins are conected to each other. Finally the major nerves are sewn together with microsurgical techniques. Finally the skin is closed and the operation is complete.
