Usually pills: There are a few specific drugs called tyrosine kinase inhibitors that were designed specifically for the genetic changes that are part of cml. These drugs are pills that control but don't cure the leukemia for most patients.

See below...: First of all, the treatment for any type of leukemia should be coordinated by a hematologist/oncologist. To answer your question, chemotherapy is usually necessary like for any other type of leukemia; however, there is also a special drug that is central in the chronic treatment of cml, namely Gleevec (imatinib), with a specific benefit in this type of leukemia.
