Many reasons: Hormonal imbalance, anovulation, but most common is it's a symptom of dysmenorrhea. This is caused by production of prostaglandins in preparation for implanting a fertilized egg (whether it happens or not). Oral contraceptives, an ssri medication may help. See your gyn if this concerns you.
