X-Ray: The only true way is with an x-ray, although some fractures may not be readily apparent right after the injury. Otherwise, point tenderness over a single spot, deformity of the bone, a shortened finger, a finger starts to cross over other fingers as you make a fist, or swelling. Sometimes a tuning fork can be applied to a different part of the same bone with pain indicating a fracture.

Xray: No way to tell for sure it's fractured without an xray. See a doctor.
