Safe, but effective?: Amoxicillin is considered a very safe medication to use, even ok for pregnancy, but most colds are caused by viral infections. Antibiotic may be useful in some bacterial cases. Secondary bacterial illnesses such as sinusitis/middle ear infections can occur during/following a significant cold episode, so Amoxicillin can come in handy in those instances. Generally not useful for colds. Good luck.

No: You should not be prescribed Amoxicillin if you have a cold. A cold is a virus. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic. Antibiotics don't work against viruses, only bacteria. If you have a bacterial infection or signs of one, that is different. Taking unnecessary antibiotics increases your risk of developing a drug-resistant bacterial infection because you kill good bacteria that crowds out the bad.
