Fluid overload: Congestive heart failure? If in hospital too much IV fluid can result in volume or fluid overload.

It Can Happen!: Unless given I.V. In very large amounts and over short periods of time (acute surgical emergencies or major abdominal surgeries), fluids given this way are eliminated by the kidneys quite well. If, however, a person's has a compromising heart condition or poor kidney function then the fluid can overload both the heart and the kidneys causing a build-up of fluid throughout the entire body.
