Splenectomy risks: Yes. If you do not have a spleen, it's harder for your body to control and confine an infection. Infections that you get are more likely to spread and become serious than if you had a spleen. It's important for you to partner with a doctor who understands this and will mark it prominently on your chart. Sometimes you will get an antibiotic when we would let a normal person fight the infection solo.

Define "sick": People without a spleen tolerate most infections without major incident like everyone with a spleen. However, there is an infection called post-splenectomy sepsis which can be extremely serious. Everyone without a spleen should be adequately immunized especially against the pneumococcus. If you have fever and chills without an obvious reason, see a doctor asap.
