What happens if my iron level gets too low?

You get anemic: People who don't eat enough iron-containing foods, such as women who don't eat red meat, can have low iron and be anemic. The screening tests for iron deficiency are simple blood tests. If an adult has low iron, the doctor will usually check to see if she is losing blood in the stool (as a screening test for colon cancer), as well as look for other reasons for low iron.

Agree with Dr. K: Iron deficiency causes anemia, or low hemoglobin. Low iron may be due to excessive blood loss in menstruation, abnormal blood loss in intestine, low iron intake due to poor diet, or lack of iron absorption due to intestinal disease . Other manifestations depend on the cause of low iron.
