Avoid fragrances: Gnats might be attracted to traces of fragrances on your body from personal care products such as soap, shampoo, conditioner, and antiperspirant. Even laundry products could leave fragrance on your clothes. Use fragrance-free laundry and personal care products, and use bug repellant when you know you'll be outside.

That's what I do :): Your question made me smile. I do the same thing with insect bites that are very itchy. I think it helps because what you are doing by using your fingernail to make a cross on the skin where it itches loads the nerve with a pain sensation which overpowers the itch receptors and helps relieves the itch.
