Xray: The only way to tell if a finger or hand is broken is to get an xray. I have seen patients who are very swollen and painfull that don't have a fracture and patients who have very little pain that do have a fracture. Most fractures a easily treated if caught early. See a hand surgeon and get an xray.

X-ray is best: If no pain or swelling then probably ok. Anything else that is painful and/or swollen after a couple of days get film.
