TMJ Disorder/Bruxism: The likely dental related cause can either be clenching or grinding your teeth (bruxism) or other problem with the joint that joins your mandible to the temporal bone on the side of your head. Salivary gland problems or a dental abscess can also cause this type of pain. See your dentist for proper evaluation and diagnosis.

Bruxing: Possibly you are grinding your teeth and this is causing muscle spasm in the muscle which just happens to attach to the back border of the jaw. See your dentist to rule out bruxing.
