Prion disease: Fatal Familial Insomnia, CJD, Varient CJD, Scrapie, KURU all have in common the relentless progression caused by infection with something that is less sophisticated than a virus. Most are acquired from ingestion of contaminated brains (or meat in the case of Varient CJD) CJD can be contracted through corneal transplant or transfusion of contaminated blood or blood products.
