No: Hemodialysis is not painful. But if you mean is the catheter inserted painful. The answer is no but the doctor usually puts a pain medicine during insertion. After in place, the catheter is not painful.

A little: The hd catheter insertion thru the jugular stings a little. You usually get sone Lidocaine and sedation to put it in. It is like a big IV line.
