What's the difference between the feeling of a fracture and shin splints?

Acuity: Fractures cause acute swelling and pain, shin splints cause activity related pain that is predictable. Some times its difficult to know the difference between a stress fracture and shin splints. An x ray, bone scan or MRI may be able to differentiate.
