Do people recreationally abuse propoxyphene?

Of course...: Anything that can cause a mental “change in state”, will be used or abused by someone to achieve a brain change. Some substances, like alcohol, cause a reliable change in state that is similar from person to person. Other substances, like propoxyphene, produced a more unreliable change & only at higher, more dangerous doses. Also, it's not available in usa anymore.
