A member asked:

I have a slight elevation of platelet count 499, low mcv 75.40, mchb 24.60. could this be from my monthly period?

Yes: It could be from menstrual flow. The low MCV especially is common in young women of reproductive age who have monthly flows. This is a sign of low-grade iron deficiency - from the monthly flow. The high platelets are nothing to worry about - that's a mild elevation and can be due to dehydration, low blood volume from flow, or inflammation. Regardless, see your doc for a complete eval.

Iron deficiency: The data you provided is consistent with iron deficiency. You should talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. You should take oral iron and multivitamin supplements to correct the deficiency.
