To allow intercourse: During arousal, the pattern of blood flow in the penis is altered and a paired structure in the shaft of the penis called the corpus cavernosum fills with blood. This filling increases hydrostatic pressures which make the penis more rigid, and allowing penetration during sexual intercourse. Disease than affect blood flow (diabetes, atherosclerosis) can lead to erectile dysfunction (ed).
