Obesity/bad fat: Obesity is the main cause of fatty liver disease which is now #1 liver illness in america. Excessive food, especially fats causes obesity and thus fatty liver disease. It is reversible if no cirrhosis yet. So, if u have been told so, wt loss, minimize alcohol, avoid drugs will reverse the fatty liver. Live healthy, live well, live long. Consult doc. Good luck.

Yes, fat within the liver is fat. But the fat is not a result of eating fats (long promoted; very misleading & unhealthy myth). Study my answer below. As water based creatures, these basic physiology principles alway apply; always work. High triglycerides from liver conversion of sugars into triglyceride fats for storage (transported by the lipoproteins) will plummet & fatty liver will reverse.

Causes of fatty live: Many things. They range from inborn metabolic disorders to just plain eating too much.
The liver is the only organ capable to produce fat, everywhere else is storage space. So by default, fat will be stored in the liver as well. There are some disease that will result in increased fat production or decreased use and therefore the storage of fat begins.

Ingested Carbs, Etoh: Body ability to store sugar low & sugar used, in small amts, before fats. Sugar (ie. All carbs) in food (beyond low ongoing needs) quickly converted by liver into fat & if liver unable to export fat fast enough; fatty liver results. Thus eliminate all carbs, including fruit, so liver has to convert fat back to sugar & ketones (quite healthy). Study dietdoctor, taubes, lusting, attia, fatheadmovie.

Adjust your diet: Fatty liver is often the result of a diet high in fat. Genetics plays a role. Alcohol consumption can cause it, so can medications, viral hepatitis, autoimmune or inherited liver disease, rapid weight loss and
malnutrition. Things you can do - avoid alcohol, low fat diet, control diabetes if you have it, avoid certain medications (see your doctor), live a 'healthy life style'.

Lack of exercise: This is the usual explanation nowadays. Some of this is genetic, and related to the "metabolic syndrome" and type ii diabetes. I also trust you were checked for hepatitis c and wilson's, and there are a couple of obscure genetic conditions in which the liver becomes fat-laden. Best wishes.

Inflammation: Fat in the liver, leads to inflammation of the liver, which with time will lead to scarring of the liver.
Fat in the liver causes the exact same damage as alcohol does to the liver.

Can you tell me how could fatty liver cause cirrhosis?

Underlying problem: The fat doesn't cause the cirrhosis. The underlying problem -- alcohol, hepatitis c, lack of exercise, whatever -- first causes fatty change, then liver cell death and scarring.
