Do not need EEG: Eeg does not diagnose or predict epilepsy. Slowly reduce the med, practice good health habits, and see how you do. Three months of no medication and no seizures can be considered a "cure".

I don't know: Most probably, u will not have any other episodes of seizures. If u did not have any seizure activity in 14 yrs., why r u still on dilantin. Phenytoin has serious side effects and u should discuss with your neurologist, if u can be tapered off dilantin. No one can predict that your next epileptic episode will happen during your sleep. Consult your neurologist. Thanks.

EEG is useful: If there is a lot of concern about a seizure after you stop dilantin, your neurologist can check an eeg while you are cutting down on the dilantin. Any return of unusual eeg activity may suggest that you need to remain on an antiepileptic agent. I do not favor keeping someone on long-term Dilantin as it can cause a lot of side effects.
