Several causes: The technical term is atrophic glossitis or bald tongue. It is caused by the absence of papilla which are the small bumps that cover the tongue. Diabetes, anemia, celiac disease and certain nutritional deficiencies are common causes as are anti-cancer drugs. It can also be caused by an inherited nerve disorder called riley-day syndrome.

Loss of surface buds: Smooth tongue is caused by the loss of the surface papilla or taste buds of the tongue. You may have a reduced ability to taste and can have various causes from vitamin deficiency to allergic reaction. The condition is usually temporary, but if it lasts then you may want to see a doctor to find out what is causing the problem.
