What may be causing my child's barking seal cough?

Viral croup: There are many viruses that will invade the upper airway of a kid 6m-8y and trigger an outpouring of mucous & cough that sounds like a seal barking. This is generally a 4-5 day illness with low grade temp but sometimes complicated by an ear infection.Some cases are quite dramatic, marked by late night scary events&trips to the er while daytime brings harsh voice.Have kid seen if signs are worrisom.
