how should one talk to an elderly parent about moving to a nursing home?

Challenging issue: This can be a very difficult situation. Sometimes siblings and family members disagree about these things, which makes it even harder. Geriatric care managers may be able to help -- these are often nurses and social workers with special skills in dealing with elderly people & their families. Is it safe to use herbal skin remedies while nursing?

No: I wouldn't. Many could be unsafe-- for example, products with lavender oil have estrogen-like effects, and have caused feminization of boys when used topically (though it's unclear if ingestion occurred.) i recommend you use plain, proven safe products-- anything that's labeled for use on your baby is going to be safe for you to use on your own skin.

Does nursing lead to breast lumps?

Dr. Julia Sundel
Pediatrics 18 years experience
Yes: Sometimes a nursing mother can have a galactocele, a milk-filled cyst in the mammary gland. This is benign and is caused by a protein plug that blocks off the milk duct. It is safe to breast feed your baby. It usually resolves when the baby is weaned.

My mother had a painful labor and the doctors said it was a ''dry'' labor. Am I at risk of this?

No: Dry labor is when the water breaks and labor doesn't start until many many hours later. You can just imagine sliding on a water slide without the water! dry labor is not hereditary.
A 45-year-old member asked:

How must I discuss difficult news like needing a nursing home with my elderly parent?

Dr. Kevin Passer

It is difficult: If possible, i would try and get your siblings (if you have some) as well as other family members involved in the entire process. It is very difficult for parents as well as for the children involved when it comes to needing nursing home placement. Perhaps there is a therapist, like a social worker in your area who can give you some ongoing assistance. Most nursing homes employ such an individual.
