what makes antidepressants controlled substances?

Nothing.: There are no antidepressants that are controlled substances. Perhaps someone has told you that benzodiazepines such as Alprazolam or Clonazepam are antidepressants. Nothing could be further from the truth, as they can lead to depression if improperly used. There are a lot of uninformed people out there.
