Anatomic survey: A mid-pregnancy ultrasound is designed to visualize the organs and look for the most common congenital abnormalities. The sex and gestational age can be determined, and if there are any problems seen, i referral can be made to a maternal fetal medicine expert for a targeted level III ultrasound.

Evaluation of baby.: Usually around 18-20 weeks is when patients have an ultrasound to evaluate the baby's anatomy (look at developing brain, arms, legs, heart, spine, etc). The placenta is also evaluated. At this visit, the baby's gender is usually identified. This is a routine ultrasound for all patients. If you are having ultrasounds after this, your doctor may be looking for specific issues.
