Sleep, etc.: The #1 way to increase mental alertness is to sleep enough on a daily basis. Exercise is also helpful for a variety of reasons, primarily because it promotes cardiovascular fitness. Avoidance of mind-dulling drugs or alcohol can also improve alertness, as can engaging in challenging tasks that one finds interesting.
