Cholesterol buildup: In coronary artery disease, cholesterol builds up in the walls of the arteries. As the walls thicken, the inside (the lumen) becomes narrowed creating an obstacle for the blood trying to get to the heart. The process begins in the teenage years but only becomes symptomatic later in life.
