Several Things: The first question is whether the patient has diabetes or is at risk for diabetes. The stress of surgery itself could raise blood sugars, but having a predisposition or a current diagnosis of diabetes would make high blood sugars more likely during/after surgery. Why is the patient having surgery? Different medical/surgical conditions place patients at different risk for high blood sugar.
