Possibly ??: A low blood count could mean cancer due to blood loss from the colon. Other cancers can cause a low count. Since you are 41, i presume that he is in the late 70's or possibly older. There are a large list of other things that can be associated with low blood count such as kidney, heart liver disease. An evaluation is in order. Cancer is not first on the list.
