Skin: Discerning : So, the simple answer is that herpes is very painful. It often appears initially as a cluster of blisters and then the top of the sore deteriorated and there is open sores underneath. Folliculitis can be an infection or an irritation of the skin. It is not usually blistering or as painful as herpes. Googling skin rashes is a good way to see text book pictures of the various diagnoses.
