Several things.: Echinacea and zinc have both can shorten the duration and lessen the severity of a cold, if begun within the first 24-48 hours of illness. Vitamin c might shorten the duration of a cold, but doesn't prevent it. Chicken soup decreases mucus production. Buckwheat honey helps with cough. There are a huge number of other remedies that lack sufficient evidence. Overall best: water and rest.
