Thirst and Others: Early symptoms of hypernatremia include thirst, dehydration, lethargy, irritability, disorientation, confusion, and weakness. However, severe symptoms include tremor, rigidity, seizures, coma, and death. The neurological symptoms are associated with rapid changes in the serum sodium. Slower changes are better tolerated.
