Burn classification: 1st degree burns are superficial, non-blistering burns, like sunburn. 2nd degree burns are partial-thickness burns, and should be subclassified as superficial partial-thickness (minimal scar risk) or deep partial-thickness (more severe scar risk). Treatment is needed for most 2nd degree burns. 3rd degree burns are through the full thickness of the skin and require medical care and skin grafting.
