Not sure we know: There are various theories about formation of behaviors. In sadism, there is enjoyment of hurting, and seeing another suffer pain and degradation. With sexual sadism, there is sexual excitement associated with humiliating and hurting another. Often, people with paraphilias like sadism are also diagnosed with other mental illnesses. Some feel these people have been tormented by others as children.
