It can also cause discharge from the ear if it is infected.

Does wearing earplugs help heal a perforated eardrum?

Can be helpful: Keeping the ear free of water and tincture of time is what heals an acute tympanic membrane perforation. A ear plug designed to week water out of the ear during bathing, swimming or other water exposure is most helpful.

A 19-year-old female asked:
What's the symptom for me to know if my perforated eardrum is healing or getting worse?
1 doctor answer • 2 doctors weighed in

Dr. Robert Knox answered
ENT and Head and Neck Surgery 37 years experience
Eardrum Perforation: The three best symptoms of a healed eardrum perforation are water tolerance in the shower, no whistle when you blow your nose, and hearing levels back to baseline.
The best way to know for sure is to have your doctor examine your ears. The ears have no "user modifiable" parts.
