What is a therapeutic phlebotomy?

Reduce Blood Count: In a disorder known as polycytemia vera, the body makes too many red blood cells which can lead to blood literally clogging up especially small blood vessels. A unit of blood will be withdrawn at some interval established by a physician letting the blood count drop/complications to lessen. Unfortunately the blood taken in this disorder has to be disgarded, not used for blood transfusions.
