Possibly: Painful cramps with menses is called dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea can be reduced by as much as 85% with hormonal birth control pills. Other causes of dysmenorrhea such as endometriosis and fibroids need to be ruled out if your pain continues with hormonal birth control.
