A member asked:

Can epstein-barr virus (ebv) turn into a deadly disease, and what are the symptoms, treatments, and causes?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It can rarely.: Almost everyone gets infected with ebv and almost everyone recovers. During acute infection, complications include low platelets, potential airway obstruction and spontaneous or trauma-related ruptured spleen. The virus stays dormant after one recovers and can be associated with lymphomas in very immunosuppressed hosts.
