Yes: Yes. In addition to all the long-term risks of cigarette smoking (lung cancer, emphysema, heart attack), smokers are also more likely to develop respiratory infections, including bronchitis and pneumonia. The ability of the lungs to fight off infection becomes impaired.

Yes...: There are diseases that occur much more often in smokers like chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) and many malignancies like lung cancer, bladder cancer, etc. These diseases are much less common in non-smokers and in people who quit smoking. So, smoking cessation is needed to prevent or decrease symptoms in these diseases.
