Yes.: It is possible for stones to pass without much pain. Few patients are this lucky. Passing a kidney stone is famously compared to childbirth. Pain occurs if the progress of the stone is held up, and the ureter squeezes against the obstruction. If the size & orientation of the kidney stone are favorable, is may pass without much difficulty. Matrix stones appear to be covered in a gelatinous coat.
