Irritation: Chronic irritation of the base of the umbilicus or "belly button" can lead to a small area of inflammed and irritated tissue that can intermittantly bleed. This can be to traped dead skin and moisture leading to macerated tissue.

Belly Button Bleeds: An infection may be the cause of naval bleeding – especially if there is discharge, pain or odor. A second cause for bleeding can be trauma. A frequent scenario is when someone sticks their finger in their umbilicus to search for “lint” and they scratch or abrade the skin.
