Tracking and tracing: It depends on the std. In some cases they may just keep a record of it for tracking purposes: to find out whether the incidence is going up or down over time. But in other cases (such as syphiiis) they may take a more active role, interviewing you about recent sex partners so that they can contact those people and get them tested and treated.
